A case study of Thorne, Crowle, Goole, and Hatfield Moors raised peatbogs. Peats are essentially deposits, over a mineral substrate, of organic matter which has not been completely oxidised because the prevailing conditions are oxygen deficient. A cool climate and rainfall levels exceeding evaporation are the primary environmental requirements for raised bogs.
