During 1992/93, English Nature reviewed, for the first time, the conservation significance of England’s birds and bird habitats, and set national priorities for bird conservation from both a species and habitats perspective (published as Birds in England: context and priorities – Brown & Grice 1993). Over the same period, English Nature began developing the Natural Areas concept. The final version of the Natural Areas map was launched by English Nature at the Progress ’94 event.
