England’s peatlands cover an estimated 1.2 million Hectares. Their restoration is essential in the fight to restore nature and reduce the impacts of the climate crisis. This report sets out using the best evidence available, the likely amounts of greenhouse gases being released from the different types of land uses found on England’s Peatlands.
Peatlands offer an effective way to deliver Nature Based Solutions to restore nature, reduce carbon emissions and support the recovery of our water environment. It is also important that we stop further degradation of these ecosystem now, so that rehabilitation at least starts from the best possible place. This will also help them adapt to climate change and prevent further biodiversity loss along with the ecosystem services they provide to society.
