Botanical surveys in 1992 and 1993 showed that there had been rapid colonisation of the area by saltmarsh plants. By 1993, two years after the experiment started, a recognisable pioneer saltmarsh community had become established across the whole area of survey. By 1994 twenty-five species of plant had colonised the site, including the nationally-scarce Shrubby Sea-blite (Suaeda vera). In addition, other recognisable saltmarsh communities were developing and intergrading with the first.
