Flamborough Head on the east coast of England is a prominent headland of Upper Cretaceous chalk which has considerable geological conservation value. Chalk is a relatively soft rock and readily bored by marine organisms which, when combined with the limited geographic distribution of chalk, form unusual and uncommon marine biotopes. Conflicting data were available to determine the offshore extent of these chalk reefs: estimates varied between 1 and 15 km offshore. To implement effective management of the marine benthic resource, English Nature in 1995 required data on the geographic extent of the biotopes around Flamborough Head.
