Yarner Wood NNR: The Effects of Woodland Management on Fern Abundance: a Species Specific Response 2012 (RP1697)

Seven (four managed and three unmanaged), compartments were sampled in Yarner Wood. No significant difference was found between managed and unmanaged sites in respect to overall fern abundance and diversity, or the abundance of particular species present. There was, however, a non-significant effect of river presence and holly understory on fern abundance. Some ferns were more sensitive to disturbance than others. When compared with data collected from the same sites in 1984, there was no change in general fern community structure.
