The hairy wood ant Formica lugubris is at the south western edge of its range on the Stiperstones NNR. It is confined to an area of upland oak woodland which is undergoing the re-establishment of coppicing. This survey was carried out by NNR staff and volunteers follows a similar survey carried out in 2009. It recorded the size and location of nests and assessed the environmental factors affecting their distribution, in order to recommend management prescriptions for the coppicing cycle.

Closing statement
The project is primarily designed to inform the management of this site, however it may have use for other woodland sites managing for wood ants. The report can be made available on request.
