So how can you be involved?
Each year we run three or four in-house vegetation surveys and ask Natural England staff and local volunteers to get involved. These surveys are a fantastic opportunity to network, learn about the LTMN project, the sites and their management, and of course brush up on those plant ID skills. Everyone taking part will receive introductory or refresher training appropriate to their skill level, and can build on this during the fieldwork. You will spend 3-4 days in a mixed ability group surveying the permanent plots, guided by botanical experts. You will identify the plant species present, record their frequency and cover, and other sward attributes such as vegetation height, with each team completing between one to three 2m2 plots a day. These surveys will be advertised in March – April each year, both internally and via email to local volunteers.
