Lowland heathland: the extent of habitat change (1993) (ENS12)

This 1993 report records the extent of habitat change in lowland heathland. Strictly, heathland is vegetation dominated by dwarf shrubs, notably heather Calluna vulgaris, cross-leaved heath Erica tetralix, bell heather Erica cinerea and bilberry Vaccinium myrtillus. Characteristically, heaths are found on acid, nutrient-poor soils developed on freely-drained sands and gravels, where plant growth is inhibited by low concentrations of phosphorus and nitrogen.
