Ecological Advisory Service was commissioned by English Nature to collate vegetation data on two pilot study areas in the English Uplands; Dartmoor and the Peak District. The Less Favoured Area was taken as a working definition of the uplands. A reduced Phase I classification was adopted to record the vegetation data. Data was collated from several different Phase I and similar surveys in each area by copying directly on to 1:25,000 maps which were then digitised. Summary statistics have been derived for each area and are presented in this report. Further investigation was undertaken into possible definitions of ‘upland’ and the conclusion is reached that the Severely Disadvantaged Area of the Less Favoured Area would be the best choice.
