A programme of sample surveys was developed in response to the recommendations in English Nature’s Monitoring Strategy for SSSIs (Felton 1992). The principal objectives of the programme were to:
- assess the extent to which nature conservation objectives are being met for each particular habitat;
- assess the nature and extent of any threats to the features of interest in each habitat;
- provide an overview of the interests, management activities and priorities of occupiers, and the relationship between these factors and the achievement of nature conservation objectives.
Within the context of these objectives, the sample survey programme aimed to identify all influences that affect 5% or more of sites containing each broad habitat type (Felton 1992). The sample survey described in this report is the third in the programme.
