The survey aimed to improve understanding of the distribution and habitats occupied in order that measures could be put in place to maintain and enhance the existing populations in accordance with the published Species Action Plan (UK Biodiversity Group 1999). The objectives of the survey were to:
- survey for Lipsothrix nigristigma at three known sites in Lancashire and near Telford and several other similar sites in Shropshire, and on the Welsh border;
- collect environmental variables that help to define the habitat requirements of Lipsothrix or habitats occupied;
- identify strong populations where more detailed autecological work can be undertaken in future;
- write a detailed species action plan that would lead to meeting the objectives in the published plan.
