From the National Survey in 1992, it was found that the southern counties support over half the British population, a minimum of 16% of which occurs in Dorset. Following the baseline survey carried out during the summer of 1994, further monitoring of the nightjar population and distribution was requested for 1995. Grazing was introduced to Hartland Moor and Stoborough Heath during the latter part of May 1995, with 25 cattle and 12 ponies. This survey was undertaken between June and July 1995; during this period the weather conditions were very different from those of the previous year.
